Three kinds of New Year’s Eve cruise
The format matters more than the boat. Here is what each of the three means in practice.
- NYE cruise with dinner on board — a full meal served on the river, boarding from 7:45pm. The most comfortable option and the one that works with children. Dinner is at shared tables.
- NYE dinner at a restaurant + cruise — dinner on land first, then you walk to the pier. These run around eight hours in total and start earliest.
- NYE cruise with disco or party on board — a bar, a DJ or live music, and deck space. Boarding is later, from 8:15pm. Some are adults-only, several take children.
Will you actually see the fireworks?
Yes — but not from wherever you boarded. The display is centred on the London Eye, and the boats do not stay at their pier. Once on the water the captain positions the vessel wherever the river allows on the night: traffic on 31 December is heavy, and tides and weather both affect where a boat can hold position. The display is organised by the Mayor of London, and no operator guarantees a specific viewing spot.
In practice, your boarding pier tells you where the evening starts, not where you will watch from. The exceptions are The Wellington and Tattershall Castle: both are permanently moored on the Victoria Embankment and do not sail, so the view is fixed and known in advance.
Before you book
- Boarding piers are Westminster Millennium, Embankment, Temple Stairs, Bankside, London Bridge City and Tower Millennium.
- Most operators ask for smart or semi-formal dress, and several state no trainers.
- Large bags and luggage are not allowed on board, and there is nowhere to store them at the piers.
- Every boat has a bar, and on most of them you pay for what you drink beyond the welcome glass. Payment methods vary sharply: the Sapele takes cash only, while several others take card only. Check the individual boat before you rely on either.
- Roads across central London close from early evening. Allow far more time than usual and arrive at least 30 minutes before boarding: missed departures are not refunded.

If the official fireworks tickets have sold out, a cruise is not a substitute for that ticket — it is a different evening entirely, with a seat, a bar, somewhere warm and no barrier in front of you.
Where a boat shows a confirmed 2026 fare it is on sale now, several with free cancellation up to 30 days before departure. Where the figure comes from the 2025 season it is a guide only: those boats open for booking as their operator confirms its 31 December sailings.
What you get for the price
The prices above fall into two groups: boats with a confirmed 2026 fare, already on sale, and boats still showing last season’s figure as a guide. Where we can compare the two, 2026 has come in 6% to 15% above 2025 — so read the older prices as a floor, not a forecast. Either way they group cleanly by format, which is why the filters are the fastest way to narrow the list.
Party or disco on board — from £249
The cheapest way onto the water and the most common format. A welcome drink on boarding, live music or a DJ, deck space for the fireworks and a glass of champagne at midnight. The bar is yours to pay at. These sail three to five hours, boarding from 8:00pm onwards. The higher-priced boats in this group add canapés through the evening, and champagne on arrival as well as at midnight.
Restaurant dinner then cruise — £325 to £351
A three-course dinner at a London restaurant — Balls Brothers at Minster Court, Browns at Butler’s Wharf or Doggett’s Coat and Badge, depending on the boat — then a short walk to the pier. Around eight hours from the table to the last mooring. It suits people who want a proper meal without eating on a moving boat.
Dinner served on board — from £455
Three courses on the river, tea or coffee, half a bottle of wine per person and a live singer or band. Dinner is at shared tables of ten. Boarding from 7:45pm, back between 1:15am and 2:00am. The most comfortable option, and the one that works best with children.
The most expensive New Year’s Eve in London is not a cruise at all: the all-inclusive party at County Hall, beside the London Eye, was £799 last season — beer, wine, prosecco, premium spirits and cocktails included.
What happens at midnight
Boats take up position shortly before twelve and the music stops for the countdown. Champagne is poured, the display launches from the London Eye and along the South Bank, and for the next few minutes nobody is looking at anything else. Then the music restarts and most boats stay out for another hour before returning to their pier.
