    Description

This Christmas Day tour to Windsor, Oxford and Avebury's stone circle is a 10-hour-30-minute day trip on 25 December 2026, leaving Golden Tours Bus Stop 1, Bulleid Way, Victoria, SW1W 9SR at 8:00am and returning about 6:30pm. It includes a walking tour of Windsor, a visit to the Avebury stones, a walking tour of Oxford and a three-course Christmas lunch in a traditional Oxford pub. ⚠ Windsor Castle is closed on Christmas Day and entry is not included. Guiding is in English only. From £199 per adult, free cancellation until 20 December.

Read this before you book: the castle is shut

Windsor Castle does not open on 25 December. No tour can take you inside it, including this one, and entry is not included in the price for that reason. What you get in Windsor is a guided walk through the town — the streets, the Long Walk, the castle from outside — on a morning when almost nobody else is there.

We put this first because it is the fact that decides whether the day is right for you. Buried at the bottom of a page it becomes a complaint; read now, it is simply the shape of the trip.

Avebury, and what it actually is

Avebury is a Neolithic monument of three stone circles and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — one of the best-known prehistoric sites in Britain. Its purpose has never been established. You walk among the stones rather than viewing them from behind a rope, which is the part people remember.

What Avebury is not is the oldest stone circle in the world. You will read that claim in a number of places; it is not true, and it is not something our supplier says.

Lunch in Oxford, then the walk

Christmas lunch is three courses, served in a traditional pub in Oxford, with a vegetarian main course available. A guided walk through the city follows — entry to the colleges is not included, and on 25 December they are closed in any case. Parts of the itinerary may change on the day.

Windsor again, the day after, with Stonehenge

If it is Windsor and the west country you want and the castle being shut is the problem, the Boxing Day tour to Windsor, Bath, Stonehenge and Salisbury runs on 26 December for £120 and includes entry to Stonehenge — the only paid admission included in any of our Boxing Day trips. It has no Christmas lunch, and the castle is still closed to visitors.

    Avebury

The final stop of this very special Christmas Day will be Avebury, where you’ll see the famous stone circles. This Neolithic monument, made up of three stone circles, is, like Stonehenge, one of the most well-known prehistoric sites in the UK and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. The true purpose of this fascinating site remains unknown: listen to the intriguing theories surrounding the stone circle and decide for yourself what Avebury means!

Avebury will be a wonderful surprise, and after your visit, you will return to London, where the tour ends at Victoria around 6:30 PM.
