Chelsea Winter Illuminations is a light trail through the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea (Royal Hospital Road, SW3 4SR, minutes from Sloane Square), open from 25 November to 28 December 2026 with timed entry every 15 minutes between 4:30pm and 8:30pm. The ticket includes the trail and the Winter Village at the end of it: fire pits, heated tipis, an après-ski bar, a food hall, an artisan market and a pop-up shopping village. Allow about an hour for the trail. Adults £19, children aged 3 to 16 £13, under-3s free. Free cancellation up to 14 days before.
A light trail inside a place you normally cannot enter
The Royal Hospital Chelsea is the home of the Chelsea Pensioners and the site of the Flower Show; for a few weeks each winter its Ranelagh Gardens become a trail of light installations by leading British light artists. The 2026 route is longer than before, with new large-scale pieces and interactive installations built for children, threading through the trees with sound and colour. It is a walk, not a show: you go at your own pace and the trail ends where the village begins.
The Winter Village
Bigger this year and on a new site, with more room to stay. Fire pits and heated tipis outside, the Après-Ski Bar for a drink, and the new Chelsea Food Hall with covered, heated seating. Around them an artisan market and a boutique shopping village where brands pop up for the season. Food and drink are paid for separately.
Good to know before you book
Arrive at least 15 minutes before your entry time. Security bag checks apply; no large bags or suitcases, and there is no cloakroom. Only registered assistance dogs are admitted; scooters, skates and bicycles are not allowed on the trail. Dress for an evening outdoors in December, with warm clothing and proper shoes. The trail is wheelchair accessible. Transport is not included: the nearest station is Sloane Square.
